The Best Toyota Radiator Cooling Parts

What Radiators Do

They help prevent engine overheats. Coolant (antifreeze) is what absorbs the heat an engine puts out; the radiator is what helps dissipate it.

How a Radiator Works

It's a straightforward process, starting with antifreeze, which flows through inlet and outlet hoses, getting pressurized by a radiator cap as it goes. This enables the antifreeze to absorb as much heat as it can. Flat, fin-style aluminum tubes then expel the heat, and a fan disperses it into the air nearby.

Some radiators have extra fins that help scatter heat even better. They're called turbulators. Others have transmission coolers. They're side-mounted tanks that transfer excess transmission heat to the antifreeze instead of letting it go into the air. This helps a transmission work as well as it can.

Unfortunately, any radiator can develop problems because of age and use. Luckily, if you think yours may be failing or that it has gone bad, there are symptoms that'll tell you.

Signs of Radiator Problems

They include:

  • Abnormal engine noises
  • A sweet, syrupy ethylene glycol odor
  • Discolored or gooey antifreeze
  • Leaking antifreeze
  • Car HVAC malfunctions
  • A temperature gauge that reads abnormally high

The sweet smell often means you've got an antifreeze leak. To figure out what's happening, do an inspection.
