Understanding a Car Air Intake System

Your vehicle's air intake (also called an induction system) pulls oxygen into your engine through an intake manifold, where it's distributed throughout engine cylinders. When the air combines with gas from your fuel system in the right ratio, your spark plugs ignite the mix, and it burns. This is how an engine produces power.

How Do Air Intakes Work?

It's simple. First, oxygen goes through an engine filter, which captures many of its contaminants. Air levels are then regulated by a few components: a mass airflow sensor, an air metering system, and oxygen sensors. Mass airflow sensors are what monitor air movement. Air metering systems provide feedback to the engine's control unit, or ECU. Oxygen sensors monitor the exhaust level. If your engine has a cold air intake, it can draw in cooler and denser air, improving the engine's power output slightly.

• A lit Check Engine light on your dashboard
• Fast engine rev in neutral and when parked
• Faster or slower idling than normal
