The Best Toyota Brake Rotors

Brake Rotors: What They are & What They Do

Of the two types of brake systems, disc brakes are commoner than drum brakes. In a disc brake system, brake rotors are the discs themselves. They attach to wheel hubs via ribs, and their job is to fasten to brake calipers with brake pads attached. Together, all three parts create the friction required for braking. Rotors also help dispel the heat the process produces.

Types of Brake Rotors

There are several. Many cars, for example, use the blank & smooth type (otherwise called "smooth"). Many SUVs and trucks use either the slotted or the drilled type (the latter otherwise called "cross-drilled"). Some sports cars and other high-performance vehicles, however, use the drilled & slotted type.

Smooth rotors come either solid or vented and are typically for everyday driving. They're easy on brake pads, resist cracking and rust, and last awhile. Plus, they're inexpensive. Slotted rotors, on the other hand, are spiral-grooved to channel away dust and contaminants, keeping their surfaces clean and improving airflow over them.

Cross-drilled rotors, though, have holes drilled completely through them as well as a larger surface area, making them better heat dissipators and more dependable in wet weather. They're ideal for track and towing applications. Drilled & slotted rotors, however, offer the best features of both slotted and cross-drilled types, making them exceptional performers.

When Do Brake Rotors Need to be Replaced?

Usually every 70,000 miles. Review your vehicle's owner's manual for more info. You can also look for signs your rotors are failing or bad, including surface damage, wobbling when braking, and unusual brake noises. If you see any of these, inspect and change any rotors you need to. However, be sure you swap them out in pairs to keep your vehicle braking properly.
