Unfortunately, none last forever. You'll have to replace most kinds every 40,000 to 50,000 miles or so. Luckily, there are signs that'll tell you it's time. Besides the obvious (ABS or brake warning lights on the dash), look for:

• Pad damage and wear
• Whining or vibrating brakes
• Long slow and stop times
• Grinding sounds

Grinding noise often indicates rotor warp and probable damage, caused by excessive brake pad wear.
