What are Brake Calipers?

They're clamps with brake pads attached to them, part of your vehicle's disc brake system. They come in single-piston, dual-piston, four-piston, and six-piston types, and most vehicles will at least have front calipers. Their job is to fasten to your brake rotors when you press your brake pedal, creating friction. This helps the pads create the resistance they need to slow and stop your vehicle.

What Do Brake Calipers Do?

It's pretty simple. Step on the brakes. Your master cylinder sends brake fluid through a series of hoses and valves, pressurizing each piston and charging the calipers. They press down, and you slow down and stop.

The process generates heat, though, and if your rotors can't dissipate it well enough, it can eventually affect the calipers negatively. For instance, it can cause seal decay, enabling contaminants to build up and resulting in corrosion. Luckily, there are symptoms of caliper problems you can look for, and they're pretty easy to identify.

Signs of Bad Brake Calipers

• A lit brake warning light or ABS system warning light on the dashboard
• Abnormal brake pressure
• Brake fluid leaking into your engine compartment or onto your wheels
• Sideways drift during braking
• Continuous grinds or squeals
